Artificial turf is built to last 10 to 15 years in Arizona's climate but only if you treat it right. Here's the AZTM-recommended routine to protect your turf from day one.
Essential maintenance schedule
Remove debris first
Start with a leaf blower or stiff-bristle broom to clear leaves, twigs, and trash. Organic matter left to sit will decompose against the backing and give weeds a foothold don't let it get there.
Blow debris toward the edges before rinsing. Work with the turf, not against it.
Rinse the surface
A thorough hose-down flushes out dust, pollen, and airborne pollutants that settle into the fibers over time. In Arizona, this matters more than most places our dust and air quality are no joke.
No special equipment needed. Standard garden hose pressure does the job.
Brush the fibers
Use a stiff-bristle push broom synthetic bristles only, never metal and brush against the grain to lift blades back upright. High-traffic areas flatten quickly. Regular brushing is the difference between turf that looks lived-in and turf that looks maintained.
Spot clean spills
Act fast on spills. Mild soap and water handles most stains. For stubborn spots, a 50/50 water-and-vinegar solution breaks down residue without harming fibers or backing. Avoid anything not labeled safe for synthetic turf.
Replenish infill
Sand infill compacts and washes away over time. When blades start losing their upright posture or the surface feels harder underfoot, it's time to top up. AZTM can assess and replenish infill as part of a scheduled service visit.
Don't wait until fibers are flat. Proactive infill maintenance extends turf life significantly.
Professional deep clean
Once a year, a professional cleaning with anti-microbial treatment removes compacted debris, allergens, and pet odor buildup that routine rinsing can't reach. Our technicians also inspect for early wear, lifting edges, or infill issues you'd miss on your own.
Ask about our power brooming add-on for a small fee we'll broom your entire yard to help lift fibers and redistribute infill. Results vary by age and wear. Call to add it.
Pet owners & high-traffic yards
Pick up solid waste immediately, same rule as natural grass. For urine, rinse the area weekly at minimum; during monsoon season, rain handles most of it. If odor develops, a diluted enzyme cleaner (Simple Green Outdoor Odor Eliminator is our go-to) neutralizes ammonia without damaging fibers skip the bleach and household cleaners. For high-traffic spots where blades stay flat, increase your brushing frequency. Weeds along edges are rare but can happen spot treat with Roundup or your preferred weed killer applied directly to the weed, not saturated into the backing. Get them early.
What to avoid
- No open flames, fireworks, BBQ grills, or fire pits directly on or adjacent to turf. Synthetic fibers melt, they don't recover.
- No metal rakes or metal-bristle tools they tear the backing and damage fiber roots.
- Pool floaties, inflatable toys, and curved plastic items left in direct sun act as magnifying glasses and will scorch fibers underneath. Pick them up.
- No bleach, petroleum solvents, or harsh chemical cleaners they strip UV protection and void most manufacturer warranties.
- Never park vehicles on turf weight crushes infill permanently and flattens fibers beyond recovery.
- If snow removal is ever needed (rare in Arizona, but it happens), use a plastic shovel only. Metal shovels cut through the backing.

How often should I clean my artificial turf?
A quick rinse every week or two keeps dust down in the dry Phoenix air, with a more thorough brushing once a month. Homes with pets or heavy foot traffic benefit from rinsing more often.
Can I pressure wash synthetic turf?
A light pressure setting from a distance is fine for spot cleaning, but high pressure up close can displace infill and damage the fibers. For deep cleaning, a professional power brooming and rinse is the safer route.
How do I get rid of pet odor on turf?
Rinse pet areas regularly and use an enzyme-based turf deodorizer as needed. Proper drainage and the right infill, installed correctly, prevent most odor from building up in the first place.
Does the infill need to be replaced?
Infill settles and compacts over time, so topping it up every few years keeps the blades upright and the surface performing. It is a small task, not a full replacement.
How do I keep my turf from matting down in high-traffic areas?
Brush the high-traffic paths against the grain periodically to lift the fibers. A quality, higher-density product resists matting better, which is why product selection matters up front.
