We come to you. Arizona Turf Masters measures your yard, builds the base and installs your lawn on your property, with our team of full-time turf experts from the first visit to the final walkthrough. We install across Phoenix, Scottsdale, Mesa, Chandler, Gilbert, Tempe, Glendale, Peoria, Queen Creek and Tucson.

Since 2006 we have been putting turf in Arizona yards and watching how it holds up in this climate. That is the part most people shopping for a lawn cannot see from a photo, and it is the part that decides whether you still love the yard in year seven.

What an installed lawn actually costs

$6.00 to $12.00 per square foot installed. Minimums do apply.

That range is not a dodge. Where your yard lands inside it depends on things we can only see standing in it: how much old grass and soil has to come out, how far material has to be carried, whether the grade needs correcting, which turf you pick, and what infill the yard needs.

Try it yourself. Our pricing guide has two working estimators, one for lawns and one for putting greens. Put your square footage in and you will get a real range before anyone comes out.

We include up to 3 inches of base material where applicable in a standard install. If your grade is low because of work someone else did, additional aggregate is charged at a nominal fee, and we tell you that before we start rather than after.

The dog yard question, answered properly

If you have talked to a neighbor with turf and a dog, you have heard that turf smells.

Sometimes it does. It is worth understanding why, because the difference is usually the installation system rather than the grass itself.

Urine has to move through the turf, through the infill and out through the base. Anything under the turf that holds moisture in place is what you end up smelling in August. We generally do not recommend weed-barrier fabric directly beneath pet turf, because it can interfere with drainage and retain urine.

What we look at in a dog yard:

  • No weed-barrier fabric under the turf where the dogs actually go
  • Free-draining base, built and compacted so liquid moves down and out
  • Antimicrobial infill options available where they make sense
  • Drainage planned for the actual yard, not assumed

We are not going to tell you every turf we sell is dog-friendly. That depends on the dog, the yard and the build. Tell us how many dogs you have and where they go, and we will spec it for that.

Heat, honestly

Artificial turf gets hot in direct Arizona sunlight, just like pavers, concrete, decking and other outdoor surfaces. No turf stays cool in direct summer sun, and we will tell you that up front.

What is true is that heat is manageable. The difference between a yard you use and a yard you avoid comes down to a few practical things: infill choice, lighter reflecting fiber, where the shade falls in the afternoon, and a hose. A quick rinse can temporarily cool the surface.

The part almost nobody mentions: your windows

Certain energy-efficient and Low-E windows can reflect and concentrate sunlight onto artificial turf. Under the right conditions that reflected heat can become intense enough to distort or melt synthetic turf fibers. West and south facing exposures matter most in Arizona.

We look for potential reflected-heat conditions during our estimates so they can be addressed before installation. This has been written into our customer agreement for years, which should tell you how seriously we take it. Radiant heat from walls, pool floats and other objects left on the turf can do the same thing.

Which turf goes in your yard

We install several turf lines, and the right one depends on how the yard gets used. Dogs, afternoon sun, kids, foot traffic and how green you want it in January all point to different products. This is the part worth talking through in person, and it is why our estimate starts with looking at your yard rather than handing you a catalog.

Ask us what we would put in your yard and why. If you want to see the range first, browse our turf products.

HOAs and approvals

Many Arizona HOAs allow artificial turf, but approval requirements still vary by community.

Arizona law, including A.R.S. 33-1819, limits the ability of certain planned communities to prohibit artificial turf when natural grass is permitted. Associations may still establish reasonable requirements governing its location, installation and appearance, so read your CC and Rs or send them to us and we will read them with you.

We prepare HOA submittal packages at no charge: product data sheet, specification and photos, in the format boards actually want. We have been through this with a lot of Valley communities.

Lawn and landscape questions, answered

Why does one dog yard smell and another one doesn't?

Usually, the difference is the installation system, not the artificial turf itself.

In pet areas, drainage, base construction and infill all matter. Materials placed beneath the turf that hold moisture can also contribute to odor problems. For example, we generally do not recommend weed-barrier fabric directly beneath pet turf because it can interfere with drainage and retain urine.

A properly designed pet-turf system should move liquids through the turf and base rather than hold them near the surface.

Does artificial grass get too hot for my dog's paws?

Artificial turf gets hot in direct Arizona sunlight, just like pavers, concrete, decking and other outdoor surfaces.

For homes with dogs, we look at shade, exposure, turf selection and infill as part of the design. A quick rinse can temporarily cool the surface, and afternoon shade can make a significant difference.

If your dog regularly uses the yard at 3:00 p.m. in July, tell us. We want to design the space around how your family actually uses it.

Will my HOA approve artificial turf?

Many Arizona HOAs allow artificial turf, but approval requirements still vary by community.

Arizona law, including A.R.S. 33-1819, limits the ability of certain planned communities to prohibit artificial turf when natural grass is permitted. Associations may still establish reasonable requirements governing its location, installation and appearance.

Send us your HOA guidelines or CC and Rs. We can help prepare the turf specifications and information needed for your architectural submittal.

What should be included in an artificial turf installation quote?

A good turf proposal should tell you more than the square footage and final price.

Look for the turf manufacturer and product specifications, site preparation, base construction, infill type and application rate, installation details, warranty information and total project price.

Those details matter. If two companies are quoting completely different installation systems, comparing only the price per square foot does not tell you which proposal provides the better value.

Why isn't Arizona Turf Masters always the least expensive bid?

Because the price of an artificial turf installation is determined by much more than the turf itself.

Our standard installations include the site preparation and base construction required for the project, with up to 3 inches of base material where applicable, along with our two-year installation and workmanship warranty. The turf product carries its own manufacturer warranty.

When comparing bids, ask exactly what is going underneath the turf, how much infill is being installed, what product you are receiving and who stands behind the installation.

We are happy to walk you through our proposal line by line so you know exactly what you are buying.

Can reflected sunlight from my windows damage artificial turf?

Yes. Certain energy-efficient and Low-E windows can reflect and concentrate sunlight onto artificial turf.

Under the right conditions, that reflected heat can become intense enough to distort or melt synthetic turf fibers. West and south facing exposures can be especially important in Arizona.

We look for potential reflected-heat conditions during our estimates so they can be addressed before installation.

How much water can artificial turf save?

The biggest water-saving benefit is simple: artificial turf eliminates the routine irrigation required to maintain a natural lawn.

In Arizona, that can represent a substantial portion of a property's outdoor water use, particularly during the summer and during Bermuda growing season.

Actual savings depend on the size of the lawn, irrigation schedule, system efficiency and the landscaping that replaces it, but converting irrigated lawn to artificial turf can dramatically reduce landscape water demand.

Do weeds grow through artificial turf?

Weeds can occur with artificial turf, but they are usually very manageable.

On a properly constructed installation, weeds generally do not grow up through several inches of compacted base material. What homeowners are more likely to see are windblown seeds taking root along edges, seams or in organic debris that collects on top of the turf.

Occasional weed treatment and basic maintenance normally take care of it. Artificial turf is low-maintenance, not no-maintenance.
