My name is Mary Clanton. I have spent 17 years installing turf, and Arizona Turf Masters has been doing it across the Valley since 2006. There is no single best turf for Arizona. The best turf is the one built for how your yard actually gets used. A turf that is perfect for a front yard people mostly look at can be the wrong call for a backyard where two big dogs run every day.
What is the best artificial turf for Arizona? The one matched to how you use the yard and whether you have pets. For most Valley lawns that means a UV stabilized polyethylene turf in the 60 to 100 ounce face weight range, installed over a properly built, well drained base.
Which specs matter most? Face weight, UV stabilized yarn, pile height, drainage and the warranty. Color and blade shape matter for looks. Infill and base matter for how it lives.
Is there any artificial grass that doesn't get hot? No. All turf gets hot in direct Arizona sun. Some products and infills help, and shade and a quick rinse help more. Anyone who promises cool turf in July is overselling.
What is best if I have dogs? A pet specific turf with strong drainage, the right infill and no weed fabric underneath. The install matters as much as the product.
"Best" depends on four questions we ask on every estimate
Before our team recommends a single product, we want to know four things. They decide more than any spec sheet does.
- How will you use it? A front yard people look at is a different job than a backyard where kids play soccer every afternoon.
- Are there big windows facing the yard? Reflected heat off energy efficient glass can damage turf, so our team checks for it before choosing a product. More on that below.
- Do you have dogs? Pets change the product, the infill and the way the base is built.
- Is there an HOA or a commercial spec? Some communities have approval rules, and commercial spaces see heavier traffic.
Get those four answers right and the product choice gets easy. Skip them and even a great turf can end up in the wrong yard.
That is exactly what the estimate is for. We come to your home, look at the traffic, the pets and the windows, and show you the two or three products that actually make sense. No pressure either way.

The specs that actually matter in Arizona
Turf spec sheets list a lot of numbers. These are the ones I actually read before we put a product in an Arizona yard.
| Spec | What to look for | Why it matters here |
|---|---|---|
| Face weight | Roughly 60 to 100 oz per sq yd for most lawns | More yarn per square yard means a fuller look and more wear resistance on high traffic areas |
| Yarn material | UV stabilized polyethylene for the main blades | Our sun is the hardest thing turf faces. UV stabilization is what keeps color and strength over the years |
| Pile height | About 1.5 to 2 inches for lawns, shorter for play and putting | Taller reads more like natural grass. Shorter stands up better to heavy use and is easier to keep upright |
| Drainage | A permeable backing with a published drainage rate | Monsoon storms dump a lot of water fast, and pet areas need to rinse clean |
| Color and thatch | A blend of greens with a tan or brown thatch layer | A single flat green looks artificial from the street. The thatch also helps blades stand back up |
| Warranty | A written manufacturer warranty, plus the installer's own | Tells you what the maker stands behind, and who to call if something goes wrong |
For reference, most of the landscape turf we install runs between 60 and 100 ounces of face weight, and the products in our main landscape lines carry a 15 year limited manufacturer warranty. Our installs also carry our own two year installation warranty.
My picks by how the yard gets used
These are real products we install, matched to the jobs they do best. Your estimate may land on a different one once our team sees the yard, and that is the point of coming out.
| Your yard | Where we usually start | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Everyday family lawn | Lakeside 107 or Daytona Platinum 105 | Around 2 inch pile, 80 oz face weight, natural color blends. A good balance of look and durability |
| High traffic backyard | Lakeside Pro 127 or Lakeside Premium | 100 oz face weight, and both spec sheets list heat reduction technology in the backing system |
| Dogs | Pet turf | A pet specific turf built for drainage and airflow. Pair it with a pet infill upgrade |
| Budget minded lawn | Daytona Platinum 85 | 1.5 inch pile and 60 oz face weight, with the same omega blade as the 105 |
| Putting green | Our putting surfaces | Built for roll and speed, not for looking like a lawn. See our putting green page |
| Kids' play area | Our playground systems | Shorter pile turf over the right padding for the equipment. See our playground page |
You can see the full lineup on our lawn and landscape page, our pet turf page, our putting green page and our playground page.
Heat, honestly
Every turf gets hot in direct Arizona sun. That is physics, not a defect, and it is worth knowing before you buy. What you can control is how much it bothers you.
- Product choice. Some blades and backings are built for airflow or heat reduction, which helps at the margins.
- Infill choice. Infill affects surface feel and how the turf handles heat and pets. We walk through the options on the estimate.
- Shade. A shade sail, a patio cover or a tree changes surface temperature more than any product does.
- A quick rinse. A few minutes with the hose cools the surface fast before kids or dogs go out.
If you have a dog, my summer cool-down guide for dogs goes deeper on the habits that keep turf comfortable.
The Arizona problem nobody warns you about: your windows
Energy efficient Low-E glass reflects heat back outside, which is great for your electric bill. A slightly bowed pane can focus that reflection into a narrow band on the turf below, and over time it can melt a stripe into the fibers. It is almost never bad turf.
We check for it on every estimate, because the fix is much easier before the turf goes in than after. If you have a big west facing window over the yard, read why there is a melted section in your artificial turf before you choose a product.
What is under the turf matters as much as the turf
The best roll in the world still needs a good foundation. Why we are not the least expensive bid comes down to what is in the price.
- Up to 3 inches of base material, prepared and compacted for your yard.
- Drainage planned for monsoon season, including where roof runoff and borders send the water. My monsoon and drainage guide covers what storms really do to turf.
- No weed fabric in dog areas. We leave weed fabric out of dog areas, so the area can drain and rinse clean.
- A two year installation warranty, and a team that takes care of you from start to finish.
Turf is not a no-maintenance surface, and anyone who tells you otherwise is selling too hard. It needs an occasional rinse, a brush on high traffic areas and debris cleared after storms. It will get hot in the summer. And dust still blows in, because this is Arizona. What it does not need is mowing, overseeding or a summer of watering.
What it costs
Turf installs run $6.00 to $12.00 per square foot installed, and minimums do apply. Where you land in that range depends on the product, the size of the area and how much base work the yard needs. My Arizona turf cost guide breaks down what moves the price.

Frequently asked questions
How long does artificial turf last in Arizona? Quality turf that is installed well typically lasts 15 to 25 years. Sun exposure, traffic, pets and maintenance all affect where yours lands in that range.
Is artificial turf safe for dogs? It can be a great surface for dogs when the product, infill and base are built for pets. Not every turf is a pet turf, so tell us about your dogs on the estimate and we will spec the yard for them.
Is it okay for dogs to pee and poop on artificial turf? Yes. Pick up solids like you would on grass, and rinse pet areas regularly. A pet specific turf with good drainage, a pet infill upgrade and no weed fabric underneath lets the area drain and rinse clean.
Nylon or polyethylene, which is better? For most lawns, polyethylene gives the softest, most natural look. Nylon is tougher and holds up better to reflected heat, which is why it comes up for strips under problem windows.
Which artificial grass looks the most realistic? A blend of greens with a tan or brown thatch layer, in a pile height that fits the space. A single flat green reads fake from the street. Ask for free samples so you can compare them in your own light.
Will my HOA let me install turf? Many Arizona HOAs allow turf with architectural approval. Submit before you schedule the install. We provide free HOA submittal packages with the product data sheet, spec and photos at no charge.
Are there rebates for artificial turf in Arizona? Programs vary by city, and many have strict rules on artificial grass. Nearly all require approval before you remove any grass, and removing it first can disqualify you. The rebate section of my Arizona turf cost guide goes deeper.
Will Arizona Turf Masters install turf I supply or a product my designer specified? Yes. It does not have to be our turf. We install turf you have already purchased or a product named in your project specs, and we prepare the base and install it with the same care we give our own. Our two year installation warranty still covers our labor.
Do I have to water artificial turf? No routine irrigation. An occasional rinse keeps it clean and cools it down, and pet areas get rinsed more often.
Can I see and feel the turf before I choose? Yes. Ask for free samples when you book your estimate, and if you want to see full size product in person, we can show you that too.
