A good putting green starts with more than choosing a turf product. It starts with understanding what you want to practice.
Do you want to work on short pressure putts, long lag putts, uphill and downhill putts, left-to-right and right-to-left breaks, or chips from different lies? Do you want a putting-focused green or a complete short-game area that can receive chips and pitch shots?
Your answers guide the size and shape of the green, surface selection, target speed, cup placement, contours, fringe width, chipping area and accessories. The result should be a useful practice green, not simply a patch of short artificial turf with holes cut into it.
Choose the Features That Complete Your Green
A custom putting green can be as simple or as complete as you want it to be. During the design process, we can discuss the playing features, accessories and landscape elements that will make the area work for your game and your backyard.
Lighted Cups
Add lighted or illuminated cups for evening practice and a dramatic resort-style appearance after sunset. Lighted cups are best planned during the original design so cup placement, components and access can be coordinated before the putting surface is installed. Early-morning and evening practice also happen to be the most comfortable hours in an Arizona summer.
Custom Flags and Cup Packages
Choose flag colors, personalized flags, logo flags or a coordinated set of pins and cups that complements your home, favorite team, golf group or commercial property. Cup quantity and placement should be based on the size of the green and the variety of putting lines, not simply on how many holes can physically fit.
Ball Washers
A ball washer adds a practical, clubhouse-style finishing feature to a backyard green, community putting course, clubhouse practice area or commercial golf amenity.
Sand Traps and Grass Bunkers
Sand traps and grass bunkers can create visual interest, define target lines and provide additional short-game practice. They can be incorporated as playable hazards or landscape features, depending on available space, drainage and the type of practice area being created.
Fringe, Rough and Chipping Areas
Add a closely cut fringe, longer rough, dedicated chipping station, hitting mat, tee-line area or shot-holding pad. These features allow you to practice bump-and-runs, short chips, pitches and recovery shots, not only putts. The surface and base system should be selected around the shots you intend to hit. A putting-only green and a green expected to receive approach shots should not automatically be built the same way.
Contours, Tiers and Multiple Putting Lines
Contours can create straight putts, uphill and downhill putts, left-to-right and right-to-left breaks, double-breaking putts, long lag-putt lines, multiple approaches to the same cup, and tiers and elevation changes when the green is large enough. The goal is controlled, realistic movement. Oversized humps in a small space create a miniature-golf effect rather than a useful practice green.
Landscape and Hardscape Integration
The complete area can also incorporate paver borders, walkways, seating areas, boulders, desert landscaping, low-voltage landscape lighting and gathering space around the green. This is where Arizona Turf Masters has an advantage over companies that only install a putting surface. The green can be designed as part of the complete yard.
How Fast Should Your Putting Green Play?
Green speed is not determined by one specification alone. The putting surface, infill amount, grooming, rolling, maintenance and contour design all influence how quickly and consistently the ball rolls.
Synthetic putting greens can generally be designed for target stimp speeds from approximately 8 to 13. The right target depends on the courses you normally play, the size of your green, the length of the available putts and the amount of contour being built into the design.
A small, heavily contoured green built at the fastest possible speed may look impressive on paper but can become frustrating to use. We focus on creating a repeatable, true roll that gives you realistic practice, not simply the highest stimp number.
Contours That Create Better Practice
Thoughtful contouring is what separates a useful practice green from a decorative one.
We can design subtle breaks, uphill and downhill putts, long lag-putt lines and multiple approaches into each cup. Cup locations are planned together with the slopes so one hole can provide several different reads depending on where the putt begins.
Cup placement deserves careful planning because moving a cup later generally requires patching the original location, which can affect the ball roll. For smaller greens, subtle undulations usually provide more usable practice. More noticeable tiers and elevation changes generally need a larger footprint, often approximately 1,000 square feet or more, to play naturally rather than like miniature golf.
Choosing the Right Putting Surface
Putting-green turf is not one-size-fits-all. The correct surface depends on whether the green is primarily for putting, whether it must receive chip and pitch shots, the desired roll speed, indoor or outdoor use, expected traffic, maintenance preferences and budget.
Nylon and sand-filled synthetic putting surfaces are selected around your preferred roll, shot type and application. Dense nylon putting surfaces are commonly selected for a smooth, consistent putting-focused experience. Sand-filled synthetic systems can provide adjustable ball-roll speed and may be paired with a putting pad or other design features when the green is expected to receive chips and approach shots.

Our Putting Green Design and Installation Process
- Site Walk and Design Consultation. We measure the space, review access, drainage, surrounding landscaping and how the area connects with the rest of the property.
- Define How You Want the Green to Play. We discuss your preferred ball speed, the courses you play, putting distances, breaks, chipping requirements, cup count and any specialty features.
- Finalize the Layout and Accessories. We plan the green shape, cup locations, fringe, chipping areas, sand traps, grass bunkers, lighted cups, custom flags, ball washers, borders and surrounding landscape elements.
- Build the Base and Contours. The area is excavated and graded, the base is placed and compacted, and the planned slopes, undulations, tiers and drainage details are formed.
- Install the Putting Surface and Fringe. The selected putting surface, seams, cups, pads, fringe and surrounding turf are professionally installed and finished.
- Tune and Test the Green. The surface is infilled, groomed, rolled and tested. We review the finished ball roll, putting lines and care requirements with the owner.
How Much Does a Custom Putting Green Cost?
Custom putting green installations generally run $9.00 to $20.00 per square foot, depending on the total size, site access, putting surface, amount of fringe, shape, contours, tiers and number of cups. A $2,500 project minimum applies.
Sand traps, lighted cups, ball washers, custom flags, hardscape, landscape lighting and broader landscape work may be priced separately depending on the final design.

Keep Your Green Rolling True
Synthetic putting greens are low-maintenance, but they are not maintenance-free. Routine care includes removing leaves and debris, rinsing the surface as needed and keeping infill evenly distributed. Sand-filled greens may also benefit from periodic rolling and top-dressing to maintain a consistent roll and surface condition.
Arizona Turf Masters recommends an annual performance check for sand-filled greens, particularly when the green receives frequent play.

Can you install lighted cups on a backyard putting green?
Yes. Lighted cups can be incorporated for evening practice and a distinctive nighttime appearance. They are best selected during the initial design so cup locations and any required components can be coordinated before the surface is installed.
Can I add custom flags and a ball washer?
Yes. Custom flags, coordinated pin-and-cup packages and ball washers can be included as finishing features. These options are suitable for backyard greens, community putting courses, clubhouses and commercial golf amenities.
Can you add a sand trap or grass bunker?
Yes. Sand traps and grass bunkers can be incorporated as playable hazards or landscape features. Available space, drainage, maintenance and the types of shots you want to practice will determine the best design.
How many cups should my putting green have?
There is no single correct number. Cup count should be based on the size and shape of the green, available putting lines and the distances you want to practice. A smaller green with well-planned cups and contours can provide more useful practice than a crowded green with too many holes.
Can you create different breaks and putting lines?
Yes. We can design straight putts, uphill and downhill putts, left-to-right and right-to-left breaks, double breakers and longer lag-putt lines. The amount of contour should be appropriate for the size of the green.

Surface selection, infill, grooming, rolling and contour design all affect ball-roll speed. Target stimp speeds from approximately 8 to 13 can generally be achieved. The best speed is the one that produces realistic and repeatable practice for the size and design of your green.
Can I chip onto my putting green?
Yes. The correct putting surface and pad system can help the green receive short chips and pitch shots. The size of the green, the shot distance and the surface selected will affect how well the ball holds. A small residential green should not be expected to hold every long-distance approach shot like a full-size golf-course green.
Can you build a putting green that matches the courses I play?
We can design toward the approximate speed, firmness and types of breaks you regularly encounter. Because synthetic surfaces and natural golf-course greens are constructed and maintained differently, the goal is comparable practice characteristics rather than a permanent, exact duplication of one course.
Can a synthetic tee line handle daily driving-range volume?
Yes, that is what it is built for. Unlike natural grass, a synthetic tee line does not need divot recovery or rest rotation, so every hitting station stays open every day. Surface and pad selection are based on the volume and the clubs your operation expects it to take, and manufacturer warranty terms are provided in writing.
Do resort putting greens stay playable through overseed season?
Yes. Synthetic putting greens and tee lines do not get overseeded, so there is no fall or spring transition closure. They remain playable year-round, including through Arizona’s monsoon season on a properly draining base.

How big should a backyard putting green be?
Many residential greens are approximately 300 to 650 square feet, but the correct size depends on the space, number of cups, desired putting distances, fringe and whether you want chipping or noticeable elevation changes. Larger greens provide more room for tiers, longer putts and multiple practice stations.
How long does installation take?
A straightforward green under approximately 1,000 square feet may be completed quickly, but access, excavation, contours, specialty accessories, landscape work and weather can extend the schedule. Most custom projects should be scheduled based on their actual design rather than promised as a one-day installation.
How long will a synthetic putting green last?
A quality synthetic putting surface may remain playable for approximately 10 years or longer, depending on the product, amount of play, sun exposure and maintenance. Manufacturer warranties vary by product. If the original base remains stable, properly graded and well-draining, it may be reusable when the putting surface is eventually replaced.
Do synthetic putting greens get hot in Arizona?
Like other outdoor surfaces, synthetic putting turf can become hot in direct summer sun. Many owners practice during cooler morning and evening hours. Shade planning, surrounding landscape design and lighted cups for evening play can make the green more comfortable and usable throughout the year.
Can reflected heat from windows damage the green?
Intense reflected sunlight from certain windows can create concentrated heat capable of damaging synthetic turf. Window orientation and reflective-glare conditions should be reviewed during the site consultation.
