A city built on an old canal

The Mesa Company, colonists from Utah and Idaho, laid out the townsite in 1878. They used an abandoned canal built centuries earlier by the Hohokam for part of the first Mesa Canal, and the town incorporated in 1883. By the 1890s citrus groves stretched across the area.

Then Mesa grew, and grew fast. In the 1980s alone the population went from about 152,000 to 288,000. Today you can drive from Dobson Ranch on the west side, past Downtown Mesa and the Mesa Arts Center, up to Las Sendas and Alta Mesa on the northeast side, and out to Eastmark and Superstition Springs without ever leaving town. Spring training still fills Sloan Park every year, and every winter Mesa welcomes back the seasonal residents who spend the cooler months in Leisure World and communities across town.

Water rebates in Mesa

A rebate is a nice bonus, but the real savings with turf is never paying to water grass again. Mesa's grass to xeriscape program pays to convert grass to low-water landscaping. It does not cover artificial-turf-only projects, and the converted area needs low-water plants that cover at least half of it once they mature. That still leaves room for both: take the rebate on a desert landscape section, and put turf where you want usable green space. Mesa requires approval before you start, so apply through the City of Mesa grass to xeriscape program page before any grass comes out, and we will help you plan the layout.
